Data about the life of the work:
A tense, sorrowing piece lightened often by the children's poems, set in a Barber-ish style. Tonal and melodic. Children are mostly unison, much divisi in adult parts. Triumphand ending based on heart-rending mel;ody. American folk lullaby "All the Pretty Little Horses" frequently quoted as a kind of lietmotif throughout the piece.
