| | | What a joy it is to see the choral life becoming active again after the worldwide health crisis. The rehearsals bring us back to our beloved art; the concerts grow in number and provide opportunities for us all to discover and enjoy high-quality works and interpretations. Numerous festivals, symposiums, and singing days are back (see item 8 below). The development of the Musica database is not left behind either. Publishers and composers have resumed their work of enriching the website with their publications or compositions, and the number of visitors to Musica is on the rise, although it has not reached yet the level of the end of 2019. We are convinced that our work is a necessary service to the world’s choral community and that you will be able to benefit from it, especially in the preparation of your next concert programs. Enjoy discovering Musica International at www.musicanet.org, or get the privileged access to the database via the website of your choral federation. |

| | | Musica International publishes on its website the exhaustive list of all composers having a major birthday or death anniversary (100, 150, 200, 250 years, etc.) during the current year and the following three years. This represents hundreds of composers for each of these years. See the complete list of the major anniversaries of composers here: https://www.musicanet.org/bdd/en/anniversaries-of-composers/ Thus, for 2023, there are 427 major birthdays and 253 major death anniversaries. Let us identify some of the most famous birthdays/anniversaries: |

| | | The World Symposium on Choral Music (WSCM) is a major event in the world choral life held every three years. Organized by the International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM), it was last held in Barcelona, Spain, in 2017. It was scheduled to be held in Auckland, New Zealand in 2020, but was cancelled due to the pandemic. This year, WSCM will take place in Istanbul, Turkey, from April 25 to 30. This is THE choral event of 2023! Some of the world's best choirs will give concerts; the world's leading choral figures will give lectures, presentations, workshops, masterclasses, and reading sessions; and much more. IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO REGISTER, as the registration deadline has been extended to April 1. Even after the deadline of April 1, it will be possible to register depending on the capacity of the concert venues. Full details are available at https://wscmistanbul2023.com. |
| | Musica International will have a booth at the Expo at the World Symposium on Choral Music. Come and visit us to learn more about Musica International, discuss common projects, check or create descriptive records of your favorite scores, record the pronunciation of a piece in your native language, and ask any questions. Our team (Anastasia, Jean, and Pierre-Luc) will be happy to meet up with friends and make new acquaintances. Musica International expresses its solidarity with Turkey after the disastrous earthquakes in February. We hope that the organization of the Symposium will not be heavily impacted by the events and that choral music will be able to ease the sufferings. |

| | | | | ▪ How long have you been working at Musica? I started in November 2008, so this is my 15th year! ▪ What exactly do you do? As a music librarian, I manage the Musica database. Since it is an interactive project, I check the records made by different contributors. I am also in touch with publishers in order to include as many new scores as possible in Musica. |

| As a coordinator, I interact with all the users, members, and donors to answer their questions. In addition, I am also in charge of several administrative tasks which are quite varied. ▪ What is your favorite part of the job? The discovery of new scores, as well as the diversity of tasks. The work is never routine. ▪ Has this job taught you anything? Lots of things! In particular being versatile and adapting to current needs. ▪ What kind of questions do you receive as the Musica’s librarian? Most of the time, questions are about finding scores. ▪ What is your relation to music outside your work? It's a special relationship, because I love to listen to and to practice music since I am also a singer and a chora lconductor. ▪ As a choral conductor or singer, do you use Musica? If so, how? Absolutely! You can get very precise results by using certain search forms. It's not difficult to do and very useful! ▪ If you had to explain what Musica is to a non-musician in two sentences, how would you do it? Musica is an online virtual library of choral music. It is intended for choral conductors, publishers, and composers. In addition, it is an extraordinary pedagogical tool for teachers, musicologists, universities, and conservatories. ▪ What changes have you seen in Musica over the years? There has been a certain evolution on the technical level that allows interactivity in the Musica project. ▪ What are the perspectives for Musica? To continue enriching the database, promoting the project, and raising awareness about the useful information contained in Musica |

| | | The concept of the Musica Workshops is to bring together conductors, music librarians, publishers, and composers for a week of interaction, collaboration, and work. Participants interact directly with the database by entering new choral pieces and/or correcting and improving already-existing records. Throughout the workshop, participants are exchanging knowledge, skills, and understandings under the tutorship and with the support of the Musica team. Come participate in a worldwide collaborative project by contributing to the database while learning how to use it effectively. The next workshop will take place October 23 to 28, 2023, at the Institute of Phonetics of the University of Strasbourg, France. Start of the Workshop: Monday, October 23, 2023, 2.00 pm. End of the Workshop: Saturday, October 28, 2023, noon. Generally, the schedule is defined collegially at the beginning of the session. Typically, this is a daily schedule: - morning work from 9:00am to 12:15pm (coffee break around 11:00am)
- lunch at 12:30
- afternoon work between 2:00pm and 6:00pm (coffee break around 4:00pm) or sightseeing of the region, if working in the evening
- dinner in the city center
- free evening, a concert or socializing together
But… you are a volunteer! Therefore, you are, of course, free to determine your schedule! Learn more about the Musica workshops at https://www.musicanet.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/WORKSHOP_EN_2023.pdf or contact us at office@musicanet.org. |

| | | In each MusicaMail, we invite you to send us titles of choral scores corresponding to a given theme. In instances where the Musica database already contains records for the pieces you suggest, we will add the corresponding keyword (if necessary); otherwise, if we have sufficient information on a piece that is not yet included in the database, we will create a new record. If this is not the case, we will either contact you for more information or give you permission to write directly online into the database. |
| Theme of this MusicaMail: “The four elements (air, water, fire, earth)” |
| Please email your contributions to librarian@musicanet.org. Our Music Librarian Pierre-Luc Pfrimmer will ensure they are followed up properly. Alternatively, you can add comments to the post concerning this theme on our Facebook page. |

| | | - Help actively to reference your choral heritage online! Musica International is a collaborative project that is run by and for people involved in choral singing. We need volunteers who want to share their passion with the choral community by taking an active part in the project. You can do this in many ways, such as inputting and checking records, translating, assisting with communication tasks. Contact us at office@musicanet.org.
- You can now manage your own choral library without needing to input all the data yourself. Just sign up for a “private field” in the Musica database and take advantage of all the information we already have - all the power of our IT tools to build your own catalogue by simply adding your locations in your private field. The field will normally be accessible and visible to you alone, but you can also choose to share more widely the existence of the score in your library.
- We are also looking to establish a network of national correspondents in all countries. Why not you? Even if you are unavailable to do this yourself, perhaps you know someone who could – someone in your national choral federation, for example. As Musica International is an academic collaborative project, this could be a wonderful opportunity for a university professor, a music librarian, a conductor, a singer, or anyone interested in the choral art.
