You know that in two days
it will be Passover,
and the Son of Man will be turned over
to be crucified.

Dearest Jesus, what have you done wrong,

Evangelist:

Da versammleten sich
die Hohenpriester und Schriftgelehrten,
und die Ältesten im Volk,
in den Palast des Hohenpriesters,
der da hieß Kaiphas,
und hielten Rat, wie sie Jesum
mit Listen griffen und töteten.
Sie sprachen aber:

Then the chief priests,
scribes, and elders
of the people gathered
at the palace of the high priest,
named Caiaphas,
and conferred on how they might,
by treachery, seize Jesus and kill him.

Da nun Jesus war zu Bethanien,
im Hause Simonis des Aussätzigen,
trat zu ihm ein Weib, die hatte ein Glas
mit köstlichem Wasser und goß
es auf sein Haupt, da er zu Tische saß.

Now when Jesus was in Bethany,
in the house of Simon the leper,
a woman with a jar of precious ointment
came to him
and poured it on his head, as he sat at table.
But when his disciples saw it,
they became indignant and said:

What is the point of such waste?
This ointment might have been
sold for much
and given to the poor.

Da das Jesus merkete,
sprach er zu ihnen:

When Jesus noticed this,
he said to them:

Jesus:

Was bekümmert ihr das Weib?
Sie hat ein gut Werk an mir getan.
Ihr habet allezeit Armen bei euch,
mich aber habt ihr nicht allezeit.
Daß sie dies Wasser hat auf meinen
Leib gegossen, hat sie getan,
daß man mich begraben wird.
Wahrlich, ich sage euch:
Wo dies Evangelium geprediget wird
in der ganzen Welt,
da wird man auch sagen
zu ihrem Gedächtnis, was sie getan hat.

Why are you bothering the woman?
She has done a good deed for me.
The poor you always have with you,
but you do not always have me.
She has poured this ointment
on my body
because I am about to be buried.
Truly I say to you,
wherever this gospel shall be preached
in the whole world,
what this woman has done
shall be told as a memorial to her.

Du lieber Heiland du,
wenn deine Jünger töricht streiten,
daß dieses fromme Weib
mit Salben deinen Leib
zum Grabe will bereiten,
so lasse mir inzwischen zu,
von meiner Augen Tränenflüssen

Dear Savior,
if your disciples foolishly quarrel
about this pious woman
with oils wanting to prepare
your body for the grave,
then in the meantime permit me
to anoint your head
with a flood of tears from my eyes.

JUDAS’ BETRAYAL OF JESUS

7. RECITATIVE

Evangelist:

Da ging hin der Zwölfen einer,
mit Namen Judas Ischarioth,
zu den Hohenpriestern,
und sprach:

Then one of the twelve,
named Judas Iscariot,
went to the chief priests
and said:

Judas:

Was wollt ihr mir geben?
Ich will ihn euch verraten.

What will you give me?
I wish to betray him to you.

Evangelist:

Und sie boten ihm dreißig Silberlinge.
Und von dem an suchte er
Gelegenheit, daß er ihn verriete.

And they offered him thirty silver pieces.
And from then on he looked
for a chance to betray him.

Aber am ersten Tage
der süßen Brot,

“The master would have us say to you,
‘My time is at hand;
I wish to keep the Passover
at your house with my disciples.’”

bound hand and foot

and what you endured—
that has my soul deserved.

Er antwortete und sprach:

He answered and said:

Jesus:

Der mit der Hand mit mir
in die Schüssel tauchtet,
der wird mich verraten.
Des Menschen Sohn gehet zwar dahin,
wie von ihm geschrieben stehet;
doch wehe dem Menschen,
durch welchen des Menschen Sohn
verraten wird! Es wäre ihm besser,
daß derselbige Mensch
noch nie geboren wäre.

He who dips his hand in the dish
with me,
he will betray me.
The Son of Man indeed departs,
as it is written of him;
but woe to the one
by whom the Son of Man
is betrayed! It would have been better
for that person
never to have been born.

Da antwortete Judas,

And he took the cup, and gave thanks,

Trinket alle daraus;
das ist mein Blut des neuen Testaments,
welches vergossen wird für viele,
zur Vergebung der Sünden.
Ich sage euch: Ich werde von nun an
nicht mehr von diesem Gewächs
des Weinstocks trinken, bis an den Tag,
da ich’s neu trinken werde
mit euch in meines Vaters Reich.

All of you, drink from it;
this is my blood of the new testament,
which is shed for many,
for the remission of sins.
I say to you, from now on I will drink
no more of this fruit
of the vine, until that day
when I drink it anew
with you in my Father’s kingdom.

12. RECITATIVE (SOPRANO)

Wiewohl mein Herz in Tränen schwimmt,
daß Jesus von mir Abschied nimmt,
so macht mich doch sein Testament erfreut:
sein Fleisch und Blut, o Kostbarkeit,
vermacht er mir in meine Hände.
Wie er es auf der Welt mit denen Seinen,
nicht böse können meinen,
so liebt er sie bis an das Ende.

Though my heart is drowned in tears,
because Jesus bids me farewell,
yet his testament brings me joy:
his flesh and blood, oh precious gift,
he bequeaths into my hands.
As he, with his own on earth,
could mean no harm,
so he loves them to the end.

Ich will dir mein Herze schenken,

JESUS ON THE MOUNT OF OLIVES

Und da sie den Lobgesang
gesprochen hatten,
gingen sie hinaus an den Ölberg.
Da sprach Jesus zu ihnen:

And when they had recited
the hymn,
they went out onto the Mount of Olives.

In dieser Nacht werdet ihr euch alle
ärgern an mir. Denn es stehet
geschrieben: Ich werde den Hirten
schlagen, und die Schafe der Herde
werden sich zerstreuen.
Wenn ich aber auferstehe, will ich
vor euch hingehen in Galiläam.

You shall all be offended because
of me this night, for it is written,
I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep of the flock
shall scatter.
But after I am risen,
I will go before you to Galilee.

Erkenne mich, mein Hüter,

Even if I had to die with you,

JESUS’ AGONY IN THE GARDEN OF GETHSEMANE

O Schmerz! hier zittert das gequälte
Herz! Wie sinkt es hin,
wie bleicht sein Angesicht!
Was ist die Ursach’ aller solcher Plagen?
Der Richter führt ihn vor Gericht,

Ach! meine Sünden
haben dich geschlagen;

er soll für fremden Raub bezahlen.

Oh pain! Here trembles the tormented heart

The judge brings him to court,
where there is no solace and no advocate.
Alas, my sins
have struck you!
He suffers all the pains of Hell,
he must pay for others’ robbery.
I, alas, Lord Jesus, incurred

could diminish your trembling
and dread, or help you bear them,

And he went a little farther,
fell down on his face,

Mein Vater, ist’s möglich,

doch nicht wie ich will, sondern wie du willt.

My Father, if it is possible,
let this cup pass from me,
yet not as I will, but as you will.

22. RECITATIVE (BASS)

Der Heiland fällt vor seinem Vater nieder,
dadurch erhebt er mich und alle
von unserm Falle
hinauf zu Gottes Gnade wieder.
Er ist bereit, den Kelch,
des Todes Bitterkeit zu trinken,
in welchen Sünden dieser Welt
gegossen sind und häßlich stinken,
weil es dem lieben Gott gefällt.

The Savior falls down before his Father,
thereby raises me—and all—
from our fall
up into God’s grace once more.
He is ready to drink of the cup,
the bitterness of death,
into which the sins of this world
have been poured and stink hideously,
because it pleases dear God.

Gerne will ich mich bequemen
Kreuz und Becher anzunehmen,
trink ich doch dem Heiland nach.
Denn sein Mund,
der mit Milch und Honig fließet,
hat den Grund
und des Leidens herbe Schmach
durch den ersten Trunk versüßet.

Gladly will I consent
to take cross and cup upon myself,
drink as my Savior did.
For his mouth,
flowing with milk and honey,
has sweetened the dregs
and the harsh taste of suffering
by taking the first drink.

JESUS’ BETRAYAL AND ARREST

24. RECITATIVE

Evangelist:

Und er kam zu seinen Jüngern,
und fand sie schlafend,
und sprach zu ihnen:

And he came to his disciples
and found them asleep,
and said to them:

Jesus:

Könnet ihr denn nicht eine Stunde
mit mir wachen?
Wachet und betet, daß ihr nicht
in Anfechtung fallet! Der Geist
ist willig, aber das Fleisch ist schwach.

Could you not then stay awake
with me one hour?
Stay awake and pray that you don’t yield
to temptation; the spirit
is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Evangelist:

Zum andernmal ging er hin,
betete, und sprach:

He went away a second time,
and prayed, saying:

Jesus:

Mein Vater, ist’s nicht möglich,
daß dieser Kelch von mir gehe,
ich trinke ihn denn, so geschehe dein Wille.

My Father, if this cup may
not pass from me
unless I drink it, then let your will be done.

25. CHORALE

Was mein Gott will, das g’scheh’ allzeit,
sein Will’ der ist der beste;
zu helfen den’n er ist bereit,
die an ihn gläuben feste;
er hilft aus Not, der fromme Gott,
und züchtiget mit Maßen.
Wer Gott vertraut,
fest auf ihn baut,
den will er nicht verlassen.

What my God wills, so may it always be,
his will is best.
He is ready to help those
who steadfastly believe in him;
he helps in time of need, the gentle God,
and punishes in moderation.
Whoever trusts God
and builds upon him securely,
he will not forsake.

Und er kam und fand
sie aber schlafend,
und ihre Augen waren voll Schlafs.
Und er ließ sie, und ging abermal hin,
und betete zum drittenmal,
und redete dieselbigen Worte.

und sprach zu ihnen:

And he came and found
them asleep again,
for their eyes were heavy with sleep.
And he left them, and went away again,
and prayed a third time,
saying the same words.
Then he came to his disciples

Jesus:

Ach! wollt ihr nun schlafen
und ruhen?
Siehe, die Stunde ist hie,
daß des Menschen Sohn in der Sünder
Hände überantwortet wird.
Stehet auf, lasset uns gehen;
siehe, er ist da, der mich verrät.

Ah, do you want to sleep now
and take your rest?
Behold, the hour is at hand
when the Son of Man is turned over
to the hands of sinners.
Get up, let’s go;
behold, the one betraying me has arrived.

Evangelist:

Und als er noch redete, siehe,
da kam Judas, der Zwölfen einer,
und mit ihm eine große Schar,
mit Schwertern und mit Stangen,
von den Hohenpriestern
und Ältesten des Volks.
Und der Verräter hatte ihnen ein
Zeichen gegeben, und gesagt:
Welchen ich küssen werde,
der ist’s, den greifet.
Und alsbald trat er zu Jesum, und sprach:

And as he was still speaking, behold,
Judas, one of the twelve, came,
and with him a great troop
with swords and staves,
from the chief priests
and elders of the people.
Now the betrayer
had given them a sign, saying:
“The one I kiss,
that’s the one—arrest him.”
And he walked right up to Jesus and said:

Gegrüßet sei’st du, Rabbi!

Und küssete ihn.

And kissed him.

My friend, why have you come?

Then they stepped forward and laid
hands on Jesus, and arrested him.

THE DISCIPLES ABANDON JESUS

Und siehe, einer aus denen,
die mit Jesu waren,
rekkete die Hand aus,
und schlug des Hohenpriesters Knecht,
und hieb ihm ein Ohr ab.
Da sprach Jesus zu ihm:

And behold, one of those
who were with Jesus
stretched out his hand
and struck the servant of the high priest
and cut off one of his ears.
Jesus said to him:

Jesus:

Stekke dein Schwert an seinen Ort;
denn wer das Schwert nimmt,
der soll durchs Schwert umkommen.
Oder meinest du, daß ich nicht
könnte meinen Vater bitten,
daß er mir zuschickte mehr denn
zwölf Legion Engel?
Wie würde aber die Schrift erfüllet?
Es muß also gehen.

Put your sword back in its place;
for all who take up the sword
shall perish by the sword.
Or do you think that I
could not ask my Father
to send me more than
twelve legions of angels?
But how then would Scripture be fulfilled?
Thus it has to happen.

Zu der Stund’ sprach Jesus zu den Scharen:

In that hour Jesus said to the troops:

Ihr seid ausgegangen, als zu einem Mörder,
mit Schwertern und mit Stangen,
mich zu fahen;
bin ich doch täglich bei euch gesessen,
und habe gelehret im Tempel,
und ihr habt mich nicht gegriffen.
Aber das ist alles geschehen,
daß erfüllet würden
die Schriften der Propheten.

You have come out as against a murderer,
with swords and staves,
to take me.
Yet I sat with you daily,
teaching in the temple,
and you did not arrest me.
But all this has occurred
to fulfill
the Scriptures of the Prophets.

Da verließen ihn alle Jünger,
und flohen.

Then all the disciples abandoned him
and fled.

O Mensch, bewein’ dein’ Sünde groß;
darum Christus

for this did Christ forsake
his Father’s bosom
and come to earth.
Of a virgin pure and tender
he was born here for us,
willing to become the mediator.
To the dead he gave life,
and dispelled all sickness as well,
until the time came
when he would be sacrificed for us

Those who had arrested Jesus
led him to Caiaphas, the high priest,
where the scribes
and elders were assembled.
But Peter followed him at a distance
to the high priest’s palace,
and went in
and sat with the servants,
to see how it would turn out.
Now the chief priests,
elders, and all the council
sought false witness against Jesus,
to put him to death, but found none.

to put him to death.
And they cuffed him,
led him away, and turned him over

When Judas, who had betrayed him,
saw that Jesus was condemned to death,

the thirty pieces of silver
to the chief priests and elders,

denn es ist Blutgeld.

It is not right for us
to put them into the temple chest,
because it is blood money.

JESUS BEFORE PILATE

zum Begräbnis der Pilger.

the prophet Jeremiah predicted when he said,

from the children of Israel,

as the Lord commanded me.”
And Jesus stood before the governor,

the governor had the custom of releasing
to the people any one prisoner

had turned him over out of envy.

they gave him vinegar mixed with gall
to drink; and having taken a sip,
he chose not to drink it.

they divided up his garments,
casting lots for them,
to fulfill what was said
by the prophet: “They divided my
clothing among themselves,
and for my apparel
they cast lots.”
And they sat there all around
and watched him.
And above his head they nailed
the capital charge, in these words:
“This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.”
And two murderers
were crucified with him, one on the right
and one on the left.
And the passers-by reviled him,
wagging their heads and saying:

You who would tear down the temple of God
and rebuild it in three days,
save yourself! If you are the Son of God,
then climb down from the cross!

in the same way, along with the scribes

He helped others,
and cannot help himself.
If he is the king of Israel,
let him now climb down from the cross,

Desgleichen schmäheten ihn auch die Mörder,

The murderers who were crucified with him
also reviled him in the same way.

And behold, the veil of
the temple ripped in two,
from top to bottom;
and the earth quaked
and the rocks split,
and the graves opened,
and there arose many bodies
of the saints who were sleeping there,
and they came out of the graves after
his resurrection, and went into
the holy city, and appeared to many.
Now when the centurion, and those
who were with him watching Jesus,
saw the earthquake, and what
was happening, they became very scared,

And many women who had followed
him from Galilee and taken care of him
were there watching
from a distance.
Among them were Mary Magdalene,
and Mary the mother of James and Joses,
and the mother of Zebedee’s children.
In the evening, a rich man
of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who
was himself a disciple of Jesus, came.
He went to Pilate and requested of him
the body of Jesus. So Pilate ordered
them to give it to him.

In the evening, when it was cool,
Adam’s fall was manifest;
in the evening, the Savior
overcame it;
in the evening, the dove returned
bearing an olive leaf in its beak.
Oh lovely time! Oh evening hour!
Peace with God
is now concluded;
for Jesus has endured his cross;
his body comes to rest.
Oh, dear soul, make your request:
go, bid them give you the dead Jesus,
oh salvific, oh precious remembrance!

Und Joseph nahm den Leib,
und wikkelte ihn in ein rein Leinwand,
Und legte ihn in sein eigen neu Grab,
welches er hatte lassen in einen Fels hauen;
und wälzete einen großen Stein
vor die Tür des Grabes,
und ging davon.
Es war aber allda Maria Magdalena,
und die andere Maria, die satzten sich
gegen das Grab.
Des andern Tages, der da folget
nach dem Rüsttage,
kamen die Hohenpriester und Pharisäer

And Joseph took the body,
wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
and laid it in his own new grave,
which he had hewn out in a rock;
and he rolled a great stone
in front of the entrance to the grave
and departed.
And Mary Magdalene was there,
and the other Mary, sitting
in front of the grave.
The next day, which followed
the day of preparation,
the chief priests and Pharisees
came together to Pilate, and said:

Herr, wir haben gedacht, daß dieser
Verführer sprach, da er noch lebete:

Sir, we remember that that
deceiver said, while he was still alive,
“After three days
I will rise again.”
Command therefore that the grave
be made secure until the third day,
in case his disciples come
and steal him,
and say to the people,
“He is risen from the dead,”
and the last deception be worse
than the first!
